Which dehumidifier stops closet mold on leather goods?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black speckles on our leather bags and shoes. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and I’m worried the AC vent in that room isn’t drying the air enough. What’s the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to stop this from ruining more of our stuff?

Black speckles on leather in a closet are a clear sign of excess moisture, a common issue in Dubai's high humidity, especially when an AC isn't adequately drying a poorly ventilated space. A small, compact desiccant dehumidifier is your best choice for a closet, as they operate effectively in cooler temperatures and are designed for small, enclosed areas.

Look for a unit with a capacity of at least 500ml to 1 litre of moisture extraction per day. The critical feature is a built-in hygrometer that automatically turns the unit on when humidity rises above a set level (aim for 50-55% RH). Silica gel-based moisture absorbers are a temporary stopgap; they'll need frequent replacement and are less effective for an ongoing issue.

However, the dehumidifier only manages the symptom. The root cause is likely insufficient airflow from your AC or a potential leak in the external wall allowing humid air to seep in. For leather goods, immediately wipe the items with a dry, soft cloth and move them to a drier area. A professional inspection can identify if your AC requires servicing to improve its dehumidification function or if there's a hidden condensation issue within the wall itself that needs addressing.
