Why is my Dubai closet moldy despite AC?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment always feels damp, especially now during the humid summer. I pulled out my winter jackets yesterday and found several of them covered in black speckles, and the wall behind the clothes feels cold and slightly wet to the touch. We run the AC constantly, so I'm confused. What's the best way to fix the current mold and prevent it from coming back for good?

This is a classic Dubai condensation issue. Your AC is cooling the main room air, but that cold air isn't circulating effectively into the closed-off closet. The warmer, humid air from your bathroom or the apartment itself seeps into the closet space, hits the cold wall (likely an exterior wall), and the moisture condenses, creating a perfect breeding ground for mould.
First, address the current mould. For clothing, a professional dry cleaner experienced with mould remediation can often salvage them. For the wall, a solution of diluted white vinegar can kill surface mould, but scrubbing can release spores. For any porous materials or extensive growth, professional remediation is safer to ensure complete spore removal and prevent health issues. To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation and reduce humidity in that micro-climate. Leave the closet doors open for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to flow through. Consider installing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a moisture absorber like silica gel inside the closet. If the cold wall is an exterior wall, check for any gaps or inadequate insulation that could be causing the temperature differential. For a permanent fix, have an HVAC technician assess whether your system’s balance can be adjusted to better serve that room or if a dedicated duct can be added to direct a small amount of cool, dry air directly into the closet space. In many older Dubai buildings, this kind of localized condensation problem is common and requires a targeted solution. |
