Should I report mold to landlord?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in the corner of our living room, near the window. My son has also been complaining of a persistent cough that started around the same time. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed some dark patches on the ceiling too. Is it my responsibility to address this issue or should I be reporting it to the landlord?

The musty smell and the dark patches on your ceiling sound alarming. It's crucial to address this as mold can pose significant health risks, particularly for individuals like children who are more susceptible due to their developing immune systems.

Firstly, you should perform a preliminary inspection yourself. Check if the dark patches are indeed mold by looking for characteristics such as sliminess or discoloration in wet areas near the window. A musty smell often indicates moisture and could be a sign of hidden mold growth behind walls or under floors.

In Dubai/UAE, it's vital to be aware that landlords have responsibilities regarding property maintenance, which includes ensuring the absence of harmful substances like mold. According to UAE regulations, tenants can indeed report such issues to their landlord. If the problem persists after reporting, you may need professional assistance.

Given your observations, a thorough inspection by certified professionals would be advisable. Such inspections include moisture testing and air quality analysis, which are not tasks for DIY enthusiasts due to their specialized nature. Contacting companies like Saniservice (800-MOLDS or 800-66537) can provide peace of mind.

Regarding your son's persistent cough, it could be a result of mold exposure. It’s important to address this promptly as respiratory issues should not be taken lightly. Mold spores can irritate the airways and exacerbate conditions like asthma.

To avoid similar situations in the future, ensure proper ventilation and drying in areas prone to moisture, such as near windows or bathrooms. Regular inspections and prompt maintenance are key preventive measures against mold growth.

Remember, your health is paramount, so addressing this issue should be a priority. Don't hesitate to seek professional help if necessary.
