Can constant humidity cause health issues?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a persistent musty smell in the basement of my apartment. The humidity is so high that even with the dehumidifier running constantly, it doesn’t seem to make much difference. My kids have been coughing more frequently since we moved down there. Is there anything else I can do to reduce the moisture and prevent future issues?

High humidity levels can indeed cause significant health issues. In Dubai/UAE, we frequently face challenges related to humidity, especially during certain months of the year. The persistent musty smell you're experiencing is a clear indicator of moisture problems in your basement, which could be due to high relative humidity levels or even potential water seepage.

Humidity above 60% can lead to mold growth, which is problematic as it can release spores and other allergens into the air. These microorganisms can exacerbate respiratory issues like asthma and allergies, particularly in children who are more sensitive to such irritants. The coughing your kids have been experiencing might be linked to this; exposure to mold can trigger symptoms in susceptible individuals.

In addition to mold, high humidity levels also create ideal conditions for dust mites, which thrive in warm, damp environments. Dust mites produce allergens that can cause skin rashes and worsen respiratory conditions. The constant presence of a dehumidifier might not be enough if the humidity is consistently above 60%, as it may struggle to combat the moisture load.

In Dubai/UAE, it’s important to adhere to local building codes and regulations concerning indoor environmental quality. However, given your situation, I recommend a professional inspection by a certified environmental inspector familiar with UAE standards and practices. They can help identify the source of excessive humidity and provide tailored solutions.

Some practical steps you can take include:

1. Enhance Ventilation: Ensure that your basement has proper ventilation to reduce moisture accumulation. Open windows when weather permits, or install exhaust fans if necessary.

2. Seal Permeable Areas: Check for any cracks or gaps in the foundation and seal them with appropriate materials to prevent water intrusion.

3. Use Dehumidifiers Wisely: While a single dehumidifier might not be sufficient, using multiple units strategically placed around your basement can help manage humidity levels more effectively.

4. Monitor Humidity Levels: Consider installing a digital hygrometer to keep an eye on the relative humidity in your home. This will allow you to make informed decisions about when and how much dehumidification is needed.

5. Professional Remediation: If mold growth is present, professional remediation services should be contacted immediately. They can ensure that all affected areas are thoroughly cleaned and treated according to safety guidelines.

Remember, maintaining a healthy indoor environment in Dubai/UAE requires proactive measures due to the climate. For immediate assistance or further guidance, feel free to contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
