Is poor air quality from AC causing my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be running non-stop lately, even when it’s not that hot outside. My chest feels tight and I’ve had a persistent dry cough since we turned it on full blast a few days ago. Given how long we've lived here, is this something common or could there be an issue with the air quality?

Hey there! I'm glad to help you out. The symptoms you're experiencing could be related to the air conditioning system in your apartment, but it's also important to consider other factors that might contribute to your discomfort.
Firstly, in Dubai and the UAE, we do have strict regulations for indoor environmental quality (IEQ) including air conditioning systems. The UAE Building Code, specifically EN 13779:2014, sets out guidelines for HVAC system design and operation to ensure optimal IEQ. However, even with these standards, issues can arise if the system isn't properly maintained or if there are design flaws. Your symptoms could be a result of poor air quality from your AC unit. This is not uncommon in Dubai due to several factors including the use of economizers (which can introduce unfiltered outdoor air), improper ductwork sealing, and insufficient fresh air supply. The AC running non-stop might indicate that it's struggling to maintain the desired indoor temperature and humidity levels, leading to increased moisture in the system which could promote mold growth. Furthermore, the tightness you feel around your chest and persistent dry cough are symptoms often associated with poor IAQ (indoor air quality). Mold spores, dust mites, or other allergens present in poorly maintained AC systems can trigger respiratory issues. It's not uncommon to see these problems in apartments that have been using their AC for a long time without proper cleaning. I recommend you call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an inspection of your air conditioning system. They are professionals who can check for mold, assess the HVAC system’s efficiency and indoor air quality. Also, ensure that your AC unit is being regularly maintained by a certified technician to prevent such issues from arising. In the meantime, try to increase ventilation in your apartment when possible, use an air purifier, and keep humidity levels down using dehumidifiers if necessary. Stay hydrated and monitor your symptoms closely. If they worsen or if you notice any mold growth in your apartment, seek medical attention immediately. Remember, addressing these issues early can prevent more serious health problems. Take care! |
