Is the discoloration and musty smell mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had last month, I noticed a musty smell lingering in my bedroom closet. When I opened it up, there was a visible discoloration on one of the wooden shelves. The AC in my apartment seems to be running more often than usual too. Could this be mold? What should I do next?

The musty smell and discoloration you're noticing could indeed be indicative of mold growth. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai where humidity levels can vary significantly, such conditions are not uncommon post-rainfall or during periods of high moisture.

Mold thrives in moist environments with temperatures between 4°C to 37°C (39°F - 99°F). The visible discoloration on your wooden shelf and the increased AC usage suggest potential mold growth. Mold can manifest as black, green, white, or other colors depending on its species and environmental conditions.

In Dubai, you should be aware that according to the UAE Building Code (ASB-2018), buildings must be designed, constructed, and maintained in a manner that prevents moisture-related issues such as mold. The code mandates regular inspection for moisture ingress points and appropriate mitigation measures.

Given these circumstances, it would be prudent to engage a professional environmental inspection service provider like us here at Saniservice. We can conduct a thorough assessment of the affected area using specialized equipment such as thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden mold growth that might not be visible to the naked eye. Our team will also determine the extent and type of mold, which is crucial for effective remediation.

Remember, handling mold improperly can pose health risks, including respiratory issues and allergic reactions. Therefore, it’s important to take action quickly and ensure that all activities are performed by certified professionals who follow the guidelines set forth in the UAE’s environmental regulations.

Should you decide to move forward with a professional inspection, please call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for more information. We’re here to help ensure your environment remains safe and healthy.
