Could musty smell be mold causing cough?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in my son's bedroom, which is located at the back of our apartment. It’s been there ever since, and now his cough has worsened. We’ve lived here for 2 years, but this is new. Could it be mold? What signs should I look out for to confirm if that’s the case, or could it be something else causing their symptoms?

The musty smell your son is experiencing in his bedroom could indeed be indicative of mold growth. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, humidity levels can rise significantly during certain months due to weather conditions or air conditioning systems, creating ideal environments for mold to thrive.

Mold spores are ubiquitous and typically don't cause issues unless they find a damp environment, leading to their proliferation. Mold can produce allergens that irritate the eyes, nose, throat, lungs, and skin; it's not uncommon for people with allergies or asthma to experience respiratory symptoms like coughing when exposed to mold.

Given your son’s recent worsening of his cough, it would be prudent to consider the possibility of mold exposure. The back position of your apartment could indeed make it more susceptible to moisture accumulation, especially if there are any leaks or poor ventilation in the area.

Here are some signs you should look out for:

1. Visible Mold: Look for dark patches on walls, ceilings, or corners, particularly near windows, air conditioning units, or anywhere water tends to collect.
2. Musty Odor: A persistent damp smell can indicate hidden mold growth.
3. Water Damage Indicators: Check for any signs of water damage such as peeling paint, bubbling wallpaper, or discolored patches on walls and ceilings.
4. Humidity Levels: Use a hygrometer to monitor indoor humidity levels. Ideally, these should not exceed 60%, but in Dubai's climate, maintaining this can be challenging.

If you suspect mold is present, it’s highly advisable to consult with a professional inspection service like Saniservice. They have the expertise and equipment necessary for accurate assessment, including air quality testing which may help determine if mold spores are affecting your indoor environment.

For now, take steps to reduce moisture levels in the room by using dehumidifiers or ensuring proper ventilation. Regular cleaning of surfaces with bleach solutions (10% solution) can also prevent further growth.

Remember, dealing with mold is serious and should not be underestimated. The health implications for individuals, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma, are significant. Do not hesitate to seek professional advice and remediation services if you find any signs of mold or suspect it may be causing symptoms in your family members.
