Is this white powdery stuff on my wall mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in my bedroom closet. Upon checking, I found a mildewed odor coming from behind some boxes I hadn't unpacked since moving here two years ago. The walls seem to be slightly damp too, and there’s this white powdery stuff on parts of the wall that I’m not sure about. Could someone help me figure out if this is mold and what steps I should take next?

Yep, it sounds like the white powdery stuff on your wall could be mold. Mold thrives in damp environments and often manifests as a powder-like substance especially if left unchecked for some time. Given the recent heavy rains in the area, this makes sense.

In the UAE, particularly Dubai, we've seen an increase in mold issues post-rainfall due to the humid conditions combined with the climate's propensity towards moisture. Mold can appear in various colors - black, green, white, and others - so a powdery appearance is common.

The first step you should take is to assess the extent of the issue. Use gloves when handling affected areas as some molds can cause allergic reactions or respiratory issues for sensitive individuals. If it's an isolated spot and not expanding rapidly, you might attempt cleaning with a solution of water and bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) followed by rinsing and drying thoroughly.

However, if the mold has spread across multiple areas or if you notice any health symptoms like coughing, wheezing, or eye irritation - it's crucial to call in professionals. In Dubai, companies like Saniservice offer comprehensive services including inspection, testing, and remediation. You can contact them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for an assessment.

Remember, even if the mold seems minor, repeated exposure can lead to health issues over time. Hence, it's best not to delay professional help especially given our region’s climate and humidity levels which favor mold growth.

Stay safe and take prompt action to prevent further damage or health concerns.
