Is humidifier causing mold and health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be running almost non-stop lately, even though it's not extremely hot. My daughter has been complaining of a stuffy nose and persistent cough since last week, and I can’t help but wonder if there might be mold growing somewhere inside due to the humidifier we started using after the recent rains. Have anyone else experienced similar issues in Dubai, or could this be just my imagination?

Humidifiers can indeed contribute to mold growth and associated health issues, especially under certain conditions. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, where we experience a combination of high humidity during rainy seasons and relatively dry periods, it's not uncommon for individuals to notice similar symptoms as you've described.

When the air becomes more humid due to increased rainfall or other factors, the risk of mold growth increases significantly. Mold thrives in warm, moist environments, making areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and anywhere near your humidifier potential hotspots. If humidity levels rise above 60%, it can create an ideal environment for mold spores to proliferate.

The persistent cough and stuffy nose your daughter is experiencing could be linked to mold exposure. Mold can release allergens and irritants that might trigger respiratory issues, especially in children or individuals with existing sensitivities. In the UAE context, it's crucial to maintain optimal indoor humidity levels to prevent such occurrences.

To address this issue effectively, it’s recommended you first assess your current humidifier setup. Ensure it has a good capacity for dehumidifying and that it's set to operate at an appropriate level – typically between 30% and 50% relative humidity is ideal in Dubai’s climate. Regularly clean the humidifier as per manufacturer guidelines, using vinegar or specialized cleaning solutions can help remove any built-up mold.

Additionally, consider installing a dehumidifier alongside your humidifier to maintain stable indoor conditions. This dual approach helps manage moisture levels effectively. Make sure you also check for signs of water damage or leaks in your apartment that could be contributing to high humidity and thus promoting mold growth.

If the problem persists, it would be wise to consult with an environmental inspector who specializes in building sciences and can conduct a thorough inspection of your home. They might use tools like moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality sensors to pinpoint any hidden sources of moisture or mold. In Dubai, companies such as Saniservice provide professional mold inspections and remediation services that adhere to local regulations.
