Should I worry about mold in my bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell and some discoloration on the ceiling of my bedroom. My kids have also been complaining of persistent coughs, which I think might be due to mold growth. The AC in the bedroom seems to exacerbate the problem by circulating air around the room. Could someone recommend steps I should take to prevent this from happening again?

Absolutely, you should be concerned about the potential for mold growth in your bedroom. The symptoms described – musty smell, discoloration on the ceiling, and persistent coughs among family members – are common indicators of a mold issue. Given that this occurred after rainfall, it's plausible moisture has accumulated leading to an environment conducive to mold proliferation.

Mold is a serious matter, especially in areas with high humidity like Dubai. It can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems. The UAE generally adheres to international standards for indoor air quality, but local regulations may require professional assessments or remediation if issues are severe.

Given the symptoms reported by your children, it is highly advisable to undergo a thorough inspection by certified professionals. Such inspections should be conducted following guidelines set out in the Building Code of Dubai and other relevant Emirati directives. The inspection would identify the types and levels of mold present, assess structural integrity for moisture ingress points, and determine the extent of remediation required.

It's also prudent to consider the use of air purifiers or dehumidifiers to manage humidity and prevent further growth. However, these should be used as temporary measures until a professional assessment can be conducted. If AC circulation is exacerbating the issue, it might need adjustment by HVAC specialists familiar with mold control in high-humidity environments.

For immediate relief, clean the affected area using a solution of water and bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) while wearing protective gear such as gloves, masks, and goggles. Thoroughly dry the area afterward; prolonged moisture can lead to further mold growth.

If you decide to proceed with remediation, call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for expert assistance. Remember, addressing this issue proactively can prevent future health problems and costly repairs.

In summary, act promptly, get a professional inspection, and take necessary steps to mitigate the risk of mold in your home.
