Is the AC noise related to my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making a strange noise at night, almost like a wheezing sound. It started about two weeks ago, and it’s been getting louder. My kids have been coughing more than usual, especially when we’re in the room with the AC on. Should I be concerned that there might be some kind of allergen or something else affecting their health?

The AC noise and the increase in coughing among your children could be related but it is important to investigate further before concluding any direct correlation. In Dubai, where indoor environments are often heavily reliant on air conditioning for comfort during the hot summer months, such noises can sometimes indicate an issue with the HVAC system.

Firstly, it's crucial to understand that while AC units may produce some noise under normal operation, a wheezing sound is not typical and could be indicative of a problem. This could range from a loose component, inadequate maintenance, or even issues like refrigerant leaks which might affect indoor air quality. In the UAE, especially in Dubai where buildings are often air-tight to conserve energy, such conditions can contribute to discomfort and respiratory symptoms among occupants.

Regarding your children's coughing, it’s not uncommon for them to experience more frequent or severe coughs when exposed to allergens, irritants, or pollutants present in indoor environments. The proximity of the AC system to their sleeping areas could exacerbate any existing allergies or sensitivities they might have. Dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander are common culprits that can trigger respiratory issues.

Given these potential scenarios, it would be wise to schedule a professional inspection by a certified HVAC technician who is familiar with the local climate conditions in Dubai. They will be able to assess the AC system for any malfunctions or maintenance needs, ensuring its operation does not contribute to poor indoor air quality (IAQ). Furthermore, they can also inspect your home’s overall IAQ, checking for signs of mold growth, excessive dust accumulation, and other factors that could impact respiratory health.

It's also recommended to regularly clean and maintain the AC filters and consider using HEPA filters which are effective in capturing fine particles including allergens. Keeping humidity levels low through proper dehumidification can help prevent mold growth which is particularly important given Dubai’s climate.

If after addressing HVAC concerns, symptoms persist or worsen, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider who can conduct further assessments and provide medical guidance tailored to your family's needs.

In case of emergencies or for professional assistance related to IAQ issues in buildings across the UAE, including Dubai, you may contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Our team is here to provide immediate support and guidance.

Remember, while AC noise can be concerning, it’s the combination of that issue with worsening coughing in your children that should prompt a thorough evaluation of your home environment's IAQ.
