Can I handle small mold by myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had last month, I noticed a musty smell in the basement where my laundry room is. When I went down to check, there was some visible mold growing on the wall near the washing machine. It’s not much, maybe about 10x15 inches, but it’s concerning. Can anyone here share if this is something I can handle myself or should I call in a professional?

Certainly, dealing with small-scale mold growth can be managed by yourself but it is crucial to understand the implications and follow proper procedures. Mold growth, especially after heavy rains as you experienced, could be due to water intrusion or high humidity levels which are common concerns in the UAE/Dubai region.

In your case, where there's visible mold about 10x15 inches near a laundry area, it might seem manageable but do take note that proper handling is necessary. The first step should always be ensuring the source of moisture has been eliminated. You need to find and fix any water leaks or drainage issues that could have caused this condition.

For practical steps:
• Wear protective gear such as gloves, masks (preferably N95), and goggles when cleaning up.
• Ensure good ventilation by opening windows or using a fan if possible during the cleanup process.
• Clean the affected area with a solution of water and detergent or a mixture of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Scrubbing gently should be sufficient for small areas like yours.

However, given the UAE's stringent regulations regarding mold remediation, it is highly recommended to consult professionals for advice, especially if you plan on treating the affected area yourself. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) in the UAE has set guidelines that advise against DIY treatments for large or widespread mold infestations due to potential health risks.

If you're unsure about how to proceed or feel overwhelmed by the task, it's best to contact a certified environmental service provider like Saniservice. They can provide thorough assessments and ensure that all necessary remediation steps are taken in compliance with local laws and standards.

Remember, ignoring mold growth could lead to structural damage, health issues, and increased costs due to more extensive remediation later on. Taking prompt action is key to maintaining a healthy indoor environment.
