Is air filter issues causing throat irritation?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment two months ago, I’ve noticed that my throat has become increasingly irritated every time the air conditioning is on. The AC unit is right in the corner of my living room, and it seems to be the main source of this issue. Could there be something wrong with how the air filters are being cleaned or replaced? What should I do to prevent this from happening again and make sure both my throat irritation and the musty smell in the air are addressed?

Air filter issues can indeed cause throat irritation and other symptoms. In the UAE, especially in Dubai, the air conditioning systems are heavily utilized due to the climate, making regular maintenance crucial for ensuring indoor environmental quality (IEQ). The placement of your AC unit in a corner of your living room could be contributing to poor airflow distribution, which might result in stagnant air that can harbour allergens and irritants.

Given that you've noticed throat irritation specifically when the air conditioning is on, it's very likely that the air filters are not being cleaned or replaced frequently enough. In the UAE, according to the Abu Dhabi Municipality and Dubai Municipality regulations, HVAC systems require regular maintenance, which includes changing the filters every 3-6 months depending on the usage and environmental conditions.

To address this issue, you should first inspect the current condition of your air filter. A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow, leading to poor indoor air quality (IAQ). You may also want to look for signs like a musty smell in the air, which could indicate mold growth due to moisture accumulation behind or around the AC unit.

To prevent future issues and improve IAQ:
1. Clean your air filters regularly. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines, but if in doubt, change them every 3 months.
2. Ensure proper ventilation within the apartment. Open windows when possible to allow fresh air circulation.
3. Consider using a dehumidifier to control moisture levels, especially if you notice condensation or dampness.
4. Schedule an inspection with a professional HVAC service provider who can assess your system's overall condition and provide recommendations for improvement.

If symptoms persist despite these measures, it might be necessary to seek further assistance from a professional environmental inspector to ensure no other issues are present. In such cases, don't hesitate to contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for expert advice and remediation services tailored to the UAE market.

Remember, maintaining good IAQ is crucial for your health, especially in the hot and humid conditions of Dubai. Taking proactive steps can help mitigate discomfort and potential health issues related to poor indoor air quality.
