Should I report musty smell to landlord?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had last month, I noticed a persistent musty smell coming from under my bedroom closet. The AC in my apartment seems to struggle to keep up with the humidity, even when it's turned all the way down. It’s really concerning because the kids have been coughing more than usual. Is this something that should be addressed by the landlord or am I supposed to handle this myself?

Absolutely, the musty smell from under your bedroom closet is something that should be reported to your landlord. In dubai, particularly following heavy rains like those we have experienced recently, increased humidity can lead to moisture accumulation and subsequent issues such as mold growth, which is not uncommon in apartments with substandard ventilation or aging HVAC systems.

The presence of a musty smell often indicates the existence of dampness or mold spores. Mold thrives in humid environments and can pose significant health risks, especially for children who may be more susceptible to respiratory problems. The coughing your kids are experiencing could very well be linked to mold exposure.

According to UAE standards, landlords have a responsibility to maintain premises in a habitable condition free from structural defects that compromise the safety or health of tenants. Given that you've noticed persistent issues despite the air conditioning efforts, it's reasonable to suspect that the problem might extend beyond your control and involve the building’s infrastructure.

I would recommend engaging an independent professional for an assessment. Companies like Saniservice (contactable via 800-MOLDS or email at hello@saniservice.com) specialize in indoor environmental quality testing, including mold inspections. They can provide detailed reports on the presence of moisture and potential mold growth areas that your landlord may need to address.

In the meantime, you could take some immediate steps:
• Ensure proper ventilation by opening windows if possible.
• Use dehumidifiers or air purifiers.
• Keep an eye out for visible signs of water damage or mold in other parts of the apartment.

Remember, it's not just a matter of personal comfort but also your right as a tenant to live in a safe and healthy environment. By reporting this issue, you're ensuring that your concerns are addressed and potentially preventing more serious health issues down the line.
