Should I get a dehumidifier for high humidity?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in my bedroom closet, which is right next to the bathroom. The humidity seems really high even though I have the AC on all day. Can someone with experience tell me if this level of humidity is normal or if I should consider getting a dehumidifier myself?

Absolutely, high humidity levels can indeed create an environment conducive to mold growth and musty odors. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, the climate is often warm and humid, especially during the summer months when the air's relative humidity can soar even indoors due to air conditioning systems that don't effectively remove moisture from the indoor atmosphere.

In your situation, where you're noticing a musty smell next to the bathroom - which is a common culprit for high humidity in residential spaces - it’s highly likely that the humidity levels are indeed higher than what's considered ideal. The UAE doesn’t have strict regulations on indoor humidity levels like some other countries, but as a general guideline, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends keeping relative humidity between 30% and 50%. For comfort and to prevent mold growth, it’s recommended that you keep your home’s humidity at or below 45%.

Given that you already have air conditioning running all day yet still experience high humidity, a dehumidifier might be necessary. A dehumidifier can help reduce the moisture content in the air more effectively than an AC unit alone.

Before purchasing one, consider these factors:
• The size of your room; this will determine the capacity you need.
• Energy efficiency - look for models with high energy ratings to save on utility costs.
• Noise level – especially important if you plan to use it at night.
• Maintenance requirements – some models may require more frequent cleaning than others.

It’s always a good idea to get a professional inspection. This will not only confirm the humidity levels but also identify any hidden sources of moisture and provide tailored advice on how to manage them. If you're in Dubai, you could contact companies like Saniservice, using their number 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for an assessment.

Remember, addressing high humidity isn't just about feeling more comfortable; it’s also crucial for maintaining good indoor air quality and protecting your home's structural integrity.
