Are we exposed to mold causing my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making a weird rattling noise that gets louder every night, and now my throat feels scratchy and I’ve had a few sneezing fits. This unit is in the far corner of the building near what looks like it could be a storage room or something. Have we been exposed to mold or some kind of allergen? Should I be concerned about my health symptoms?

It sounds like the rattling noise from your AC unit and subsequent health symptoms could be linked. In Dubai and the UAE, it's not uncommon to experience issues with air conditioning units that can lead to unpleasant noises as well as potential exposure to allergens such as mold.

Mold growth in air conditioning systems is a significant concern due to the damp conditions inside these units. The far corner position of your AC unit near what could be a storage area increases the risk of moisture accumulation, especially if there's any leakage or poor ventilation. This environment can indeed foster mold development, which might be the source of your symptoms.

The scratchy throat and sneezing fits you're experiencing could very well be due to exposure to mold spores or other allergens present in the air from the AC unit. Mold can produce a variety of irritants that affect respiratory health, leading to coughs, sore throats, and in some cases, more severe allergic reactions.

Given these symptoms and your concerns about potential mold exposure, it is highly recommended to have a professional inspection done by a certified environmental consultant or hygienist familiar with the UAE regulations. The National Building Code of the UAE mandates regular maintenance checks for HVAC systems to ensure they are functioning properly and do not pose health risks.

You can contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a thorough inspection. They specialize in indoor environmental quality assessments, including mold testing and remediation services tailored to the local climate conditions of Dubai and other regions within the UAE.

In the meantime, avoid using the AC unit if possible until you can arrange an inspection. Ensure that your home is well-ventilated with natural air whenever feasible. Also, consider cleaning the filters regularly as part of routine maintenance practices for AC units in this climate.

Remember, while these recommendations provide a starting point, they do not replace professional advice and testing. Addressing such issues promptly can help prevent further health complications and ensure your living environment remains safe and comfortable.
