Are symptoms from AC use or something else?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been running non-stop for the past week due to the intense heat, but lately, I’ve started feeling dizzy and my throat feels really dry. My kids have also been complaining of coughing fits, especially at night when the room seems stuffy despite the air conditioning on full blast. Could these be side effects from the air conditioning?

Symptoms like dizziness, dry throat, and coughing fits could be related to the air conditioning system in your bedroom. It's important to consider several factors that might contribute to these symptoms, especially given the high temperatures experienced in Dubai.

Firstly, it is essential to understand the humidity levels within your home. In many parts of Dubai, the outdoor temperature can soar well above 40°C with very low humidity. However, when the air conditioning system runs non-stop, it often dehumidifies the indoor environment excessively, leading to dryness and discomfort. This might be why you're experiencing a dry throat.

Secondly, poor air circulation within your room could cause stuffiness, even if the AC is running at full power. Ensure that all vents are open and unobstructed to allow for proper airflow. Check for any blocked filters or ducts which can restrict airflow and lead to stagnant air conditions.

The continuous operation of the AC might also affect indoor air quality. Inadequate maintenance of your AC unit could result in the accumulation of dust, bacteria, and mold spores. These microorganisms can irritate the respiratory system, causing coughing fits, especially at night when you're more sensitive to allergens and irritants.

It is highly recommended that you have a professional inspection performed by a certified HVAC technician who understands local UAE standards such as those set by the Dubai Municipality or Abu Dhabi Environment Center. They can assess the condition of your AC unit, check for any leaks in the refrigerant lines, and ensure that the system is operating within the guidelines specified by local regulations.

In addition to professional inspection, consider implementing some practical measures:
• Regularly clean or replace air filters as per manufacturer's recommendations.
• Use a humidifier to maintain a comfortable indoor humidity level, typically between 30% to 50%, to prevent dryness and irritation.
• Ensure proper sealing of windows and doors to minimize outdoor pollutants from entering the room.

If symptoms persist despite these measures, it may be necessary to contact a professional environmental inspection and remediation company. They can perform thorough testing for mold, allergens, and other contaminants in your home environment. Remember that maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial for health and comfort, especially during extreme weather conditions.
