Is indoor dust causing my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a persistent dry cough and sneezing in my bedroom that has only gotten worse since then. The windows are always closed due to air conditioning issues, which might be trapping allergens inside. Could this be from the dust and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Indoor dust can indeed be the cause of your symptoms. Dust storms are quite common in Dubai and the UAE region due to the climate conditions, and they often bring a large amount of particulate matter inside buildings, especially when windows remain closed as you mentioned.

The persistent dry cough and sneezing could be linked to irritants present in dust such as pollen, mold spores, and microscopic particles from construction materials. Given that your issue has worsened since the storms, it's important to consider a few key points:

Firstly, the UAE does not have specific regulations related to indoor air quality for residential buildings; however, adherence to local building codes ensures a certain level of safety. Ensuring proper ventilation is crucial in reducing dust accumulation and improving air quality.

You should also be mindful of potential mold growth after such storms. Mold thrives in damp environments and can produce allergens that exacerbate respiratory issues. Conducting a thorough inspection for mold, particularly if the humidity levels have increased due to the storms, could be wise. If you suspect mold or are experiencing severe symptoms, consulting an environmental specialist is recommended.

To prevent future occurrences of these symptoms:
1. Regularly clean and dust surfaces in your bedroom.
2. Use HEPA filters in air purifiers for better filtration of airborne particles.
3. Consider using a dehumidifier to control humidity levels, which can inhibit mold growth.
4. Seal gaps around windows and doors with weatherstripping to prevent dust from entering.
5. Open windows when possible during less windy conditions to allow fresh air circulation.

In the meantime, you might find some relief by using an over-the-counter antihistamine or a saline nasal spray. However, if your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is advisable as they could indicate other underlying issues such as allergies or asthma.
