Should I address closet dehumidification?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain we had last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the closet near my bedroom. It’s only in there and seems to get worse every day. The AC doesn’t seem to be helping much either. Is it my responsibility to address this dehumidification issue or should I talk to the landlord about it?

Absolutely, addressing the closet dehumidification issue is something that requires immediate attention. In the UAE and particularly in Dubai, we experience high humidity levels due to our climate conditions. This creates an ideal environment for mold growth, which can cause unpleasant odors like mustiness as well as potential health issues.

In your case, it sounds like you've got a localized area with elevated moisture that hasn't been effectively managed by the AC system. Given the recent heavy rains and the fact that the issue is worsening daily, it's highly advisable to get this situation inspected by a professional. Local regulations mandate regular maintenance of HVAC systems, but in this case, the problem seems beyond what your current setup can handle.

You should also consider the indoor air quality in Dubai, where health authorities recommend maintaining relative humidity levels between 30% and 50%. Your closet is likely exceeding these limits due to poor ventilation or possibly a leak that hasn't been addressed. The musty smell could be indicative of active mold growth, which poses serious health risks.

A professional inspection would help identify the root cause of the issue—whether it's water intrusion from external sources, improper exhaust ventilation, or a malfunctioning AC unit. Once identified, remedial actions can be taken to correct the situation.

In Dubai, it’s also important to understand that you have the right to request your landlord address such issues, especially if they are causing discomfort and health concerns. However, given the technical nature of this problem, engaging a professional is recommended. They will not only diagnose but also provide solutions tailored for your specific environment.

If you choose to proceed with addressing it yourself, ensure that any dehumidifiers or air purifiers used are rated for commercial use in high-humidity environments like yours. Regular maintenance and cleaning of HVAC systems can also prevent future issues.

Remember, failure to address such problems can lead to structural damage, higher energy bills due to inefficient cooling, and health risks from mold exposure. Therefore, it’s crucial to act promptly.
