Can I clean black mold myself or hire a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. I'm in a rented apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle and my landlord is slow to respond. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or should I hire a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and what would that roughly cost?

Based on the situation you've described in your JVC apartment, I strongly advise against cleaning the black mold yourself, especially with bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually worsen the problem by adding moisture, which mold feeds on. More critically, disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing your family's exposure and potentially exacerbating your children's respiratory symptoms like coughing.

In Dubai's humid climate, hidden mold growth behind furniture is very common. Given the health concerns and the fact this is a rental property, a professional approach is essential. UAE tenancy laws and regulations, such as those from the Dubai Land Department, often place the responsibility for maintaining a habitable property on the landlord. However, proper documentation is key.

We recommend you first schedule a professional mold inspection and air quality test. This will identify the exact species of mold (crucial for understanding the health risks) and the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what's visible. This certified report will also serve as official documentation to formally present to your landlord, compelling them to address the issue.

For a standard bedroom, a full mold remediation process—including containment, HEPA filtration, removal of contaminated materials, and antimicrobial treatment—can typically range from AED 2,500 to AED 6,000+, depending on the severity. Your family's health is not worth the risk of a DIY attempt.
