How urgent is mold inspection for wardrobe smell and spots?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a strange, damp smell coming from the back of the walk-in wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's been there since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and now I’m seeing some fuzzy black spots on a few of my leather bags stored in there. Given how bad the humidity can get here, how urgent is it to get this professionally checked out?

Based on your description, this is a high-priority situation that warrants immediate professional inspection. The combination of a persistent damp smell and visible fuzzy black growth on leather goods are classic signs of an active mold colony. In the UAE's climate, high humidity, especially when trapped in enclosed spaces like wardrobes against exterior walls, creates the perfect environment for rapid mold proliferation.

The urgency stems from two factors. First, the mold is already attacking organic materials (your leather bags), indicating it is established and feeding. Second, that persistent musty odor is a clear indicator of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), which are released during mold growth and can begin to affect indoor air quality, potentially leading to health issues like allergic reactions or respiratory irritation.

Delaying an inspection allows the colony to expand deeper into the structure—possibly into the drywall, insulation, or even the AC ductwork serving that room. What appears as a small surface issue can often conceal a much larger problem behind.

Given Dubai's strict regulations on healthy living environments, particularly in rental properties, identifying and rectifying the source is critical. We strongly recommend you call a professional immediately for a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper disturbance can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.
