Could mold in my AC be causing my morning symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our main living room has been making a gurgling sound and blowing out a faint, damp smell for the past couple of weeks. My throat has been feeling really scratchy in the mornings and I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose, which I never used to get. It's the worst in the room where we spend most of our time. Could this mold in the unit be causing these symptoms, and what’s the first thing I should do to get it checked?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that microbial growth, including mold, within your AC system is the source of both the symptoms and the odors. The gurgling sound often indicates a drainage issue, likely a partially clogged condensate drain line. This stagnant water, combined with the UAE's high humidity, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria. When the unit operates, it aerosolizes these contaminants and their byproducts (microbial volatile organic compounds or MVOCs), which you're then inhaling. This directly explains the scratchy throat, stuffy nose, and the characteristic damp, musty smell.

The first thing you should do is to immediately stop using that specific AC unit to prevent further exposure and contamination. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with store-bought sprays, as this can agitate the spores and worsen indoor air quality without addressing the root cause.

For a proper assessment, you need a professional indoor environmental quality inspection. We use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect the internal evaporator coils and ductwork, and air/o-surface sampling to identify the specific microbial species and concentration levels. This is crucial, as remediation protocols differ based on the type of contamination. In Dubai, these assessments and subsequent remediation by accredited companies are essential for compliance with health and safety standards for indoor environments.

Given the clear link to your health symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional evaluation. Please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a comprehensive inspection. We can diagnose the drainage fault, identify the biological contaminants, and provide a scope for its proper remediation.
