Is bedroom black mold causing my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop and waking up with stuffy noses for the past month, and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled our large wardrobe away from the bedroom wall in our Marina apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner, probably from a hidden leak. It’s been so humid lately that it’s gotten worse. Could this be the cause of their constant respiratory issues, and what’s the first thing I should do about it?

Based on the symptoms and your discovery, it is highly probable that the black mold growth is the primary cause of your children's persistent coughing and stuffy noses. In the humid climate of Dubai, especially in coastal areas like Marina where HVAC systems often create condensation issues, this is a very common scenario. The mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air you breathe, which are known irritants and can trigger allergic reactions, asthma, and upper respiratory tract issues, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

The first and most critical step is to STOP. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, especially with bleach, as improper handling can aerosolize the spores and drastically worsen the indoor air quality and your family's exposure.

You must immediately arrange for a professional mold inspection. In the UAE, reputable companies like ours are certified by Dubai Municipality and follow strict guidelines for assessment and remediation. A Certified Mold Inspector will conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species (some types of "black mold" like Stachybotrys are particularly toxigenic) and the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads behind walls.

This is not a DIY situation given the health risks and potential for improper containment. The source of the moisture, likely a hidden pipe leak or penetrating dampness, must be identified and repaired first before any remediation can be successful.

For the health of your family, please call us immediately for a consultation and emergency inspection at 800-MOLDS or 800-66537. We can guide you on immediate steps to minimize exposure until we arrive.
