Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Triangle apartment for 2 years and just noticed a ton of black mold spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It got way worse after the heavy dew last month. I'm worried about my wife's allergies and I know I need to deal with it, but I'm not sure if this is something I can handle myself with bleach or if I absolutely need to call a professional. For a problem this size, what’s the realistic cost to get it professionally remediated in Dubai?

Based on your description of a "ton" of black mold spreading behind a wardrobe in JVC, this absolutely warrants a professional inspection and remediation. The high humidity and dew we experience here in Dubai, especially after periods of rain, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, and it often proliferates in hidden areas like behind furniture.

Attempting a DIY fix with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause or kill the mold at its roots. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your apartment and exacerbating your wife's allergy symptoms. Disturbing a large colony without proper containment and HEPA filtration is a significant health risk.

A professional inspection is crucial to determine the moisture source (could be a hidden pipe leak, condensation, or capillary action from the wall) and the full extent of the contamination, which is often worse than what's visible. For a remediation project of this size in a Dubai apartment, you should realistically expect costs to start from AED 2,500 and can go up to AED 6,000 or more, depending on the area affected, the required containment measures, and the treatments needed to ensure it doesn't return.
