AC mold in Dubai apartment: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water into the closet where the unit is, and now I’m seeing black spots spreading on the wall. It’s been humid for the last couple of weeks and the smell is getting really musty. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on what you’re describing, this is a classic scenario we see daily in Dubai, especially in humid periods. The black spots spreading on the wall are a strong visual indicator of active mold growth, fueled by the moisture from the AC leak and our high ambient humidity.

Using supermarket bleach is a common DIY mistake. Bleach is largely ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and grout. It may bleach the visible colour on the surface but leaves the root structure of the mold intact, allowing it to regrow quickly and often more aggressively. More importantly, mixing bleach with other cleaners common in households can produce toxic chlorine gas, which is a serious safety hazard.

For a situation like yours in Jumeirah, a professional assessment is highly recommended. The leaking AC unit is the moisture source that must be fixed first; otherwise, the mold will simply return. Our remediation process involves containing the area to prevent spore spread, removing the contaminated porous materials (like that section of drywall), HEPA vacuuming, and applying specialized antimicrobial agents designed to eliminate the mold at its root, not just mask it.

Given the spread and musty odor, this is beyond a simple surface clean. For your health and to ensure the problem is resolved correctly, I'd advise calling a pro. You can reach our certified team for an inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
