Black mold in AC vent: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit, and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet near the vent and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate. It's been humid the last few weeks and the damp smell is getting stronger. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or is it time to call in a professional mold remediation company?

Based on the details you've provided from Jumeirah Park, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and remediation. Here’s why:

Black mold growth of that size, coupled with an active AC leak and a persistent damp smell, strongly indicates an established colony with a ongoing moisture source. Bleach is a common but ineffective DIY solution; it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating the carpet and likely the underlying padding. More critically, disturbing it during cleaning can aerosolize potent mycotoxins and spores, significantly worsening your indoor air quality and potential health risks.

In the UAE's high humidity, this problem will rapidly recur unless the root cause—the AC leak—is identified and repaired by a certified HVAC technician. Furthermore, Dubai Civil Defence regulations often require that significant mold infestations, especially those related to building systems like ACUs, be addressed by licensed remediation companies to ensure proper containment, removal, and disposal, preventing cross-contamination to other parts of your villa.

For a confirmed infestation of this nature, a professional assessment is non-negotiable. We would perform air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, then execute a controlled remediation protocol. Don't risk your health or a recurring problem.
