Can I clean closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has had a damp, earthy smell for the last couple of months, and I just found a patch of black and green speckles on the back wall behind my clothes. We keep the AC running but it’s always a bit humid in that corner. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of localized mold growth due to elevated humidity and lack of air circulation, a very common issue in Dubai. While a small patch might seem manageable, the presence of a persistent earthy smell suggests a deeper moisture issue, likely within the wall cavity itself, possibly from a tiny condensation leak from the AC duct or a minor insulation breach.
Using supermarket bleach is highly discouraged. It is mostly water (which feeds mold), its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space, and it only bleaches the surface without addressing the root cause or the hyphae (roots) penetrating the porous wall material. For non-porous surfaces, a solution of detergent and water is more effective for surface cleaning, but your wall is almost certainly porous. In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict hygiene and environmental standards. A DIY approach can inadvertently aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home. For any visible growth exceeding one square foot, or when a musty odor is present, a professional inspection is mandatory. We would need to conduct a moisture survey to identify the exact source, perform air and surface sampling to identify the species (some are more hazardous than others), and then contain the area before safe removal and hygienization. Given the location on an external wall, the investigation is critical. For a proper assessment and to prevent recurrence, it's best to call a pro.
