Black mold in AC: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, and I’ve started noticing a few black speckles around one of the ceiling vents in the living room. It's been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service to deal with it properly?

Based on the signs you've described—a persistent damp smell from the AC and black speckles around the vent—this is a strong indication of microbial growth, likely mold, within your ductwork or evaporation coil. The high humidity we're experiencing is a major catalyst for this issue in Dubai.

While a surface wipe with a diluted bleach solution might remove the visible speckles, it is a temporary and ineffective fix. It does not address the root colony, which is thriving in the dark, moist environment of your AC system. Disturbing it through improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your apartment and potentially causing health issues.

For any visible growth inside an AC system, professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY attempts often worsen the problem. In the UAE, proper remediation requires specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial coatings to fully eradicate the biomass and prevent rapid regrowth, which is common in our climate.

Given your location in Jumeirah, where properties are often closely situated, ensuring your indoor air quality is paramount. For a definitive diagnosis and a proper, lasting solution, you should have a certified mold inspection and AC hygienization service performed.

Call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. We can determine the extent of the growth and provide a protocol that will resolve the odor and protect your system.
