How to permanently remove and prevent black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the interior wall. This is our first winter in the villa and we've been using the AC less, so I'm worried the lack of circulation and the recent humidity is causing it. What's the best way to permanently remove it and stop it from coming back next season?

Based on the scenario you've described—a patch of black mold on an interior wall closet—this is a classic case of localized mold growth due to reduced A/C usage and the resulting spike in indoor humidity, which is extremely common in Dubai villas during the winter months.

First, for a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, extreme caution is required. You MUST wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not attempt to scrub it dry, as this will aerosolize the spores. Instead, use a solution of diluted detergent or a specialized mold cleaner, applying it to the area with a cloth and wiping it away. Bleach is not recommended as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source or the root structure.

The critical step for permanent removal is identifying and eliminating the moisture source. In your case, it's almost certainly the lack of air circulation and high ambient humidity. You need to drastically improve ventilation. Run your A/C fan on the "ON" setting (not "AUTO") for several hours a day to circulate air continuously, even if cooling isn't needed. A small dehumidifier placed in the closet would be highly effective. Ensure clothes are not packed tightly against the wall, and leave the closet doors open periodically to allow air movement.

For any mold issue, especially on drywall which is porous, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find hidden dampness that isn't visible. Improper remediation can cause a much larger infestation. If the mold returns or the area is larger than it first appears, please call our certified team for a proper assessment. We follow strict UAE guidelines for safe containment and removal.
