How to safely remove black mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has started to feel really damp, and for the last month, we've both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches. I've just pulled the wardrobe away from the wall and found a patch of black mold hidden behind it, probably from the last time we had that heavy dew. What's the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back, especially with our AC running constantly?

Okay, this is a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially in villas in areas like Jumeirah with high humidity and that coastal dew. The symptoms you're describing—stuffy noses and headaches in the morning—are classic signs of mold exposure. Here’s what you need to do.

First, for safe removal of that patch behind the wardrobe: Do NOT just wipe it or spray bleach. This can aerosolize the spores and make your symptoms worse. For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe it down with a solution of white vinegar. Dry the area completely immediately after with a fan. Bag and dispose of any porous materials like damaged drywall or fabric.

To prevent it from coming back, you have to address the humidity. Your AC is key, but it must be set correctly. Ensure it's set to a "Dry" or "Dehumidify" mode if available, and keep the temperature consistently around 22-24°C. This is crucial for pulling moisture from the air. Check that your AC unit is not leaking or causing a cold bridge, which can condensate water inside the walls. Also, improve air circulation; don't push furniture right against external walls, as you've seen, that creates a dead air space where mold thrives.

Honestly, given the health symptoms and the fact it was hidden, I'd strongly recommend a professional inspection. Hidden mold in a villa's structure is common and what you see is often just the tip of the iceberg. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find the real source of the moisture. We're licensed by Dubai Municipality and follow all UAE environmental remediation guidelines for safe containment and removal.

If the stuffy noses persist or you find more mold, definitely give our team a call for a proper assessment. Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com. It's not worth the health risk.
