Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of dark, fuzzy black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It’s gotten a lot worse this past week with the humidity. I’m worried it might be mold and I’m not sure if a simple dehumidifier from Dragon Mart will cut it or if this is serious enough that I need to call a professional cleaning service.

Based on your description of dark, fuzzy black spots appearing in a closet in Jumeirah and worsening with the recent humidity, this is a classic case of mold proliferation, highly likely to be Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus niger.

In the UAE's climate, indoor humidity is the primary catalyst. Your closet, being a confined, poorly ventilated space, creates a perfect microenvironment for mold, especially when adjacent to an external wall which can experience thermal bridging and condensation. A consumer-grade dehumidifier from Dragon Mart is a temporary mitigation tool, not a remediation solution. It will not address the active colony or the spores already present.

For a confirmed infestation, DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar is strongly discouraged. it can aggravate the situation by releasing a high volume of toxic spores into your living space without killing the root system embedded in the porous closet materials (drywall, wood). This poses significant health risks, particularly respiratory issues.

Under UAE regulations, specifically the Dubai Municipality Public Health & Safety guidelines, proper mold remediation requires containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and antimicrobial treatment of affected surfaces to ensure complete eradication and prevent recurrence.

Given the location (a bedroom closet, where spores can easily spread to sleeping areas) and the visual confirmation of growth, this is not a DIY project. I highly recommend a professional inspection to assess the extent, identify the moisture source (could be a small leak or condensation), and safely remove it.
