Is black mold behind my bed a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Mirdif villa has been feeling really damp lately, especially on the cooler side of the room where the outer wall is. I just pulled our king-sized bed away from the wall and found a bunch of black spots, maybe a 30cm patch, hiding behind the headboard. We’ve been here five years and this is the first time we’ve seen this. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar solution or should I call a professional company right away to check for a bigger problem?

Good question. What you're describing is a very common issue here in Mirdif and other Dubai villas, especially with exterior walls. That cold feeling is a major red flag for condensation, which is a primary driver for mold growth in our high-humidity climate.

Regarding the black spots: While a small patch might be surface mold you can address, finding a 30cm patch hidden behind furniture is a significant indicator of a larger problem. The visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture source could be a small plumbing leak within the wall, compromised external waterproofing, or severe interstitial condensation due to the temperature differential. DIY cleaning with vinegar or bleach will only address the surface cosmetic issue and will not eliminate the root moisture problem. The mold will almost certainly return, often worse than before.

In the UAE, improper handling can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to your HVAC system and other parts of the house, creating a much larger and more expensive remediation project. For a patch of that size and given its location on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of moisture behind the walls without causing unnecessary damage.

My advice: Do not attempt to clean it. Call a professional company like ours to conduct a thorough assessment. We can determine if it's a simple fix or if there's hidden damage. Give us a call at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a proper diagnosis.
