AC rattling, high DEWA bill: handyman or AC specialist?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a loud rattling noise every time it kicks on, and my DEWA bill last month was almost double what it normally is. I'm trying to figure out if this is just a simple filter issue I can handle myself or if I need to call a technician out. What’s the real difference between getting a general handyman versus a certified AC specialist to look at it, in terms of cost and what they actually fix?

Based on the symptoms you're describing—a loud rattling noise on startup and a significantly higher DEWA bill—this is almost certainly not a simple filter issue. In the UAE's extreme climate, your AC is your most critical appliance, and these are classic signs of a serious mechanical or systemic failure.

The difference between a general handyman and a certified AC specialist is substantial. A handyman might clean the unit, replace the filter, and perhaps tighten a loose panel, offering a lower upfront cost. However, they lack the specialized tools and training to diagnose core issues like a failing compressor, seized blower motor bearings, or a refrigerant leak. These are complex problems that, if improperly addressed, can lead to a complete system breakdown and exorbitant repair costs later.

A certified specialist, conversely, will perform a comprehensive inspection. They will check refrigerant levels (handling which requires a special license from the Dubai Municipality), measure amp draw on the compressor to diagnose electrical issues, and assess the entire ductwork for leaks. The rattling noise you hear is often a symptom of a problem that is forcing the unit to work much harder, directly explaining your doubled DEWA bill.

For a problem of this nature in JVC, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY or handyman fixes are a significant risk. Our certified technicians can pinpoint the exact cause and provide a lasting solution.
