How to safely clean mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has felt damp for a couple of months, but after the recent humidity, I spotted black speckles all over our leather shoes and bags inside. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes, and I'm starting to get worried it's connected. What's the safest and most effective way for us to clean this mold ourselves without making the health issues worse?

Good morning. This is a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity like we've just had. The dampness on an outside wall suggests a potential condensation issue, which is a prime breeding ground for mold. The symptoms you and your husband are experiencing are classic indicators of mold exposure.

For a small, contained area like a closet, a careful DIY approach can be attempted, but with major caveats. Your safety is the absolute priority.

First, contain the area. Seal off the closet from the rest of the room with plastic sheeting if possible. You MUST wear proper PPE: an N95 respirator mask, nitrile gloves, and safety goggles are non-negotiable to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.

Do NOT dry brush or vacuum the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores and spread them throughout your bedroom, making the health issues significantly worse. Instead, lightly mist the affected surfaces with a dilute solution of white vinegar or a proprietary mold cleaner (available at hardware stores) to dampen the spores and prevent them from becoming airborne.

For non-porous items like the leather goods, wipe them down with a dedicated leather cleaner. However, porous materials like drywall or the backing of the closet itself can harbor mold deep within, where surface cleaning is completely ineffective. If the wall itself is speckled, the mold has likely penetrated.

Given the persistent dampness and the onset of health symptoms, this situation has very likely moved beyond a simple surface clean. A musty odor and health effects are strong indicators of a deeper problem. The root cause—likely condensation from thermal bridging in the wall or an AC issue—needs to be identified and rectified, or the mold will simply return.

For a proper assessment and to ensure your family's health, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We can identify the exact species of mold and the moisture source.
