Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to feel damp, and I just found a few small black spots on a couple of my winter jackets. This seems to have happened since the weather got really humid a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried it’s spreading but I’m not sure if I can just clean it with vinegar myself or if I need to call a professional company to come check the insulation.

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially during the high-humidity season we're experiencing now. That damp feeling on an exterior wall is a major red flag; it often points to a thermal bridge where condensation forms, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold.

First, a critical safety note: Do not use vinegar or bleach. These are not EPA or UAE-approved remediation techniques for porous materials. Vinegar can set the stain and bleach only removes the surface color, not the root structure (hyphae), allowing it to grow back stronger from inside the material.

For a small, isolated area (less than 1 square foot), a careful DIY approach might be possible. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Gently wipe the affected area on the jackets with a dry, soft brush outdoors to remove spores. Then, use a HEPA vacuum on the surrounding area. The jackets will need to be professionally dry-cleaned to properly kill and remove the mold.

However, the real concern is the wall itself. The spots on your jackets are just the symptom. The cause is the condensation within the closet structure. This requires a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact point of condensation and moisture meters to assess the wall's moisture content. The issue could be insufficient insulation, a leak in the AC duct running inside the wall, or poor vapour barriers – all common in UAE construction.

Given it's on clothing (porous) and the musty smell indicates active growth, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. We need to find and fix the source of the moisture, not just clean the visible result. Improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination throughout your bedroom.
