Could wall mold be causing my son's cough and itchy eyes?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed some black spots growing along the bottom of the wall in our youngest son’s bedroom. It’s been extra humid lately and he’s had a persistent cough and itchy eyes for the past three weeks that won’t go away. Could this mold from the condensation be the cause of his symptoms and how dangerous is it?

Based on your description of the black spots along the wall and your son's persistent respiratory symptoms, it is highly probable that the mold growth is the causative agent. The combination of high humidity, a moisture source (likely condensation from the villa's AC system or a minor, hidden leak), and organic materials like drywall or paint creates an ideal environment for mold proliferation. The symptoms you describe—a chronic cough and itchy eyes—are classic indicators of mold exposure and a potential allergic response to the spores being released into the indoor air.

In the UAE's climate, this is an extremely common issue, particularly in older villas in areas like Jumeirah where construction methods may not have prioritized modern vapor barriers. The species commonly found in such scenarios, like Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (often referred to as "black mold"), are known allergens and irritants. For a child, whose immune system is still developing, prolonged exposure can lead to more significant health concerns, including the development of asthma.

A professional inspection is absolutely critical. DIY assessments are insufficient as the visible growth is often just the "tip of the iceberg," with the main colony hidden within the wall cavity. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air and surface sampling to identify the exact species, the full extent of the contamination, and the moisture source. This is essential for developing an effective remediation plan that complies with UAE health and safety guidelines, ensuring the mold is removed correctly and the source is fixed to prevent recurrence.

For your family's health, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Please call us at 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 to schedule an inspection. We can provide a detailed report and a scope of work to make your home safe again.
