Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's gotten worse since the recent humidity. We keep the AC running but I'm worried it's spread behind the wardrobe. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should we call a professional company straight away?

Good afternoon. That's a classic issue we see in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Al Barsha. The exterior wall you're describing is likely a "cold bridge," where the outside heat and humidity penetrate, causing condensation inside the cooler closet—a perfect breeding ground for mold, even with the AC on.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot), a careful DIY approach might be possible. You'd need to move the wardrobe to assess the full extent. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Clean the visible area with a solution of detergent and water, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, your concern about it spreading behind the wardrobe is the critical point.

Given the UAE's high humidity and the fact it's on an exterior wall, there's a very high probability the mold has penetrated deeper into the drywall or insulation. Disturbing it incorrectly can release a massive amount of spores throughout your bedroom. Furthermore, Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it's addressed at the source, not just the surface.

My strong professional recommendation is to call for a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the exact source of the moisture and the full extent of the contamination hidden from view. This isn't just about cleaning; it's about identifying and fixing the root cause to prevent it from coming back.
