Can I clean black AC mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our villa in Al Barsha has been leaking a bit for a while, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the wall behind the bedroom cabinet. It’s been there for at least a couple of months and has a really damp, earthy smell. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description of a long-term leak in Al Barsha, a black fuzzy patch, and that persistent earthy smell, this is absolutely a job for a professional remediation company, not a DIY project.

The key issue here is the duration. "Long mold" infestations, especially from a chronic AC leak, are severe. The visible growth on the wall is just the surface; the real problem is likely deep within the wall cavity and the AC system itself, which you cannot effectively address with surface cleaning. Using bleach is highly discouraged as it is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots deep in porous materials like drywall. It also fails to address the mycotoxins and spores, and the fumes can be dangerously reactive in an enclosed space with poor ventilation.

In the UAE's climate, this situation can rapidly deteriorate indoor air quality, leading to significant health risks and structural damage. Proper remediation requires industrial-grade HEPA filtration, antimicrobial agents, and techniques to safely remove and dispose of contaminated materials like that drywall. Furthermore, a certified inspection is crucial to identify the exact mold species and the full extent of the contamination, which guides the remediation protocol.

For a case like this, we strongly recommend you call our certified experts for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for immediate assistance.
