Can I clean AC mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for a while, and now I’ve found a patch of black and greenish mold on the back wall behind my clothes. It’s about the size of a dinner plate and the room has a damp smell. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional company?

Based on the details you've provided, this is not a DIY bleach-cleaning situation. The presence of a persistent leak, a damp odor, and visible mold growth the size of a dinner plate inside a closet indicates a significant moisture issue that requires professional assessment.

In the UAE's climate, AC units are a primary source of condensation and mold growth if not properly maintained. The mold you're describing behind the wall is likely just the visible tip of the iceberg; the moisture has probably infiltrated the wall cavity itself. Simply wiping the surface with bleach will not address the root cause (the leak) or kill the mold roots embedded in the porous wall material. In fact, bleach can often worsen the problem by adding moisture and its fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use specialized equipment like moisture meters and borescopes to determine the full extent of the water damage and mold colonization within the wall. UAE regulations, particularly from the Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and mold remediation to ensure it is done safely without cross-contaminating the rest of your home.

Attempting to clean this yourself could inadvertently spread spores and expose you to allergens or mycotoxins. A certified company will contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, rectify the source of the leak, and use professional-grade antimicrobials to ensure the mold is eradicated.
