How to treat and prevent mold in my Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I'm worried it's from mold in our villa. I just found a small patch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the ground floor and always feels a bit damp. We run the AC constantly but I feel like the humidity is still a problem. What's the best way to treat this spot myself to stop it spreading, and what long-term solutions like a dehumidifier or specific AC setting would you recommend for a Dubai villa to prevent it from coming back?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the visible growth behind the wardrobe, this is a common yet serious issue in Dubai villas. The constant AC use can create cold surfaces where moisture condenses, especially on exterior walls and behind large furniture, leading to hidden mold.

For the small patch you found, do NOT use bleach. It only removes the surface color and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Instead, for a non-porous surface, scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is only a temporary fix for what you can see. The fact that your children are coughing suggests there may be a larger, hidden spore contamination in the air that you cannot see.

The long-term solution requires addressing the humidity. First, ensure your AC unit is serviced and the drain pan is not clogged. Set your AC to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce condensation. A dehumidifier is an excellent recommendation, especially for ground-floor rooms, to maintain humidity below 50%. Improve air circulation by periodically moving furniture away from walls and using ceiling fans.

Crucially, a small visible patch often indicates a larger hidden problem within wall cavities or under flooring. DIY solutions cannot assess this airborne contamination. For the health of your family, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is essential to find the source.
