Could AC dust be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My two young kids have been having this persistent dry cough for over a week now, especially in the evenings when the AC is on full blast in our Jumeirah Park villa. I’ve noticed a bit of a dusty film on the vents when I change the filters. Could this be related to the air conditioning, or is there something else in the home I should be checking that's causing this?

Yes, absolutely. The scenario you've described is a classic presentation we see in Dubai villas, especially during the peak cooling season. That persistent dry cough in the evenings is a strong indicator of an indoor air quality (IAQ) issue directly linked to the HVAC system.

The dusty film on the vents is a major red flag. It suggests your AC's evaporator coils and ductwork are likely contaminated with a significant buildup of dust, microbial growth (like mold and bacteria), and other allergens. When the AC "blasts," it aerosolizes these contaminants, blowing them directly into your living space. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their higher respiratory rates and developing immune systems.

Beyond visible dust, the high humidity in our region creates a perfect environment for mold growth inside the AC unit itself, specifically on the cold evaporator coils. This can release mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are potent irritants.

What you should do immediately:
1. Cease DIY filter changes without proper PPE, as this can disturb settled contaminants.
2. Visually inspect the supply vents for any visible black, green, or grey growth.
3. Check for any musty odors when the AC first turns on.

A standard AC cleaning won't suffice. This requires a professional hygienization service. We use specialized EPA-approved biocides and high-pressure agitation tools to thoroughly clean and disinfect the entire system—coils, drain pans, blower wheels, and ductwork—as per Dubai Municipality's strict health and environmental standards. This is not a cosmetic job; it's a health intervention.

Given your kids' symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional IAQ inspection. We can identify the specific contaminants and provide a targeted remediation plan.
