Is bathroom mold in Dubai a DIY or professional job?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots growing in the grout between the tiles near the shower. It's been extra humid lately and the bathroom fan doesn't seem very powerful. I’m worried it might be mold. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or is it something I can handle myself with a trip to Ace Hardware?

That's a very common question we get here in Dubai, especially in older buildings in areas like Jumeirah. The short answer is: it depends entirely on the severity and root cause.
For a few small spots on the grout, you can attempt a DIY approach. The high humidity and weak bathroom ventilation you mentioned are classic culprits. Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, or a paste of baking soda and water. Scrub the affected grout lines with a stiff brush. Always wear gloves and a mask (N95 is best) to avoid inhaling any spores. The most critical step, however, is addressing the moisture source. Run that bathroom fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a standalone dehumidifier. However, if the mold has spread over a large area (more than a square meter), has penetrated through the grout onto the wall behind, or if there's a persistent musty odor, this is no longer a DIY job. In the UAE, improper remediation can actually spread spores and contaminate other areas of your home, creating a much larger and more expensive problem. Furthermore, if the mold is due to a hidden leak from a pipe within the wall, a professional inspection is absolutely necessary to find and fix the source, which you cannot do yourself. Our company uses thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden moisture and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations, which is crucial for health. For anything beyond a very small, surface-level issue, I strongly recommend a professional assessment.
