How to dry flooded carpet and protect kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

We live in a ground-floor villa in Al Qouz and the heavy rain flooded our garden and seeped into the kids' playroom. Even though we've mopped and had fans on for days, the carpet still feels damp underneath and my youngest has developed a really bad cough that won't go away. What's the most effective way to make sure the flooring is completely dry and not a health hazard for my family?

Good afternoon. That is a very serious situation, and your concern for your child's health is completely justified. Here in Dubai, the combination of residual moisture and our high humidity creates a perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria, often within 24-48 hours.

The dampness you feel underneath the carpet is the critical issue. Mopping and surface fans are ineffective for this. The water has likely saturated the carpet underlay (padding), which acts like a sponge trapped against your concrete slab. This slab is cold, slowing evaporation dramatically, and the moisture is wicking back up into the carpet fibers, releasing mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air—a likely irritant causing your child's persistent cough.

Effective drying is a technical process. You must extract the carpet and underlay to properly dry the slab. Here's the correct procedure:

1. Carpet Removal: The carpet needs to be professionally lifted and the wet underlay discarded immediately. It is not salvageable and is the primary reservoir for contamination.
2. Subfloor Drying: The concrete slab must be dried using industrial-grade dehumidifiers (like LGR units) and high-velocity air movers in a cross-flow pattern. This is not a job for household fans. Moisture meters are used to verify the slab's core moisture content meets the UAE's standard for dry conditions (<75% RH equilibrium).
3. Hygienization: Before re-installing the carpet, the slab and the back of the carpet must be treated with an EPA-approved antimicrobial agent to address any initial mold growth and prevent future colonization.
4. Carpet Re-installation: Only once moisture readings are confirmed dry can a new, sterile underlay be installed and the carpet re-laid.

Given the health symptom already present, this is not a DIY project. The airborne particulates need to be contained and addressed. Dubai Municipality has strict guidelines on post-flood remediation to prevent public health issues.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection to assess the moisture levels and any hidden mold growth behind skirting boards or in walls.
