Is bedroom mold causing our persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling corner in my master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has developed a black, fuzzy mold patch, I’d say about the size of a dinner plate. I only noticed it this morning when I moved the headboard to clean, but it looks like it's been growing for a while. Since last week, both my husband and I have had this constant, dry cough that just won't go away, and I’m starting to worry. Could this mold be the cause of our respiratory issues?

Yes, absolutely. As a specialist in Dubai's indoor environmental issues, I can state with a high degree of confidence that the black mold in your bedroom is the most probable cause of your and your husband's persistent dry cough. This is a classic presentation of mold-related health effects.

The type of mold you're describing—black, fuzzy, and in a ceiling corner—is very likely Aspergillus or possibly Stachybotrys (often called "black mold"). These molds release microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air you breathe. In the confined space of a bedroom, especially while sleeping for 6-8 hours, exposure concentration is high. A persistent, dry, non-productive cough is one of the most common respiratory symptoms, as these particles irritate the mucous membranes of the throat and lungs.

In the UAE's climate, this is a widespread problem. Our intense AC use creates the perfect conditions for mold: the villa's structure is hot, but the interior is cold. This temperature differential causes condensation to form on cold surfaces, like metal AC ducts or concrete ceiling slabs in the corners, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive on the dust and organic materials in the paint.

Do not attempt to remove this yourself. Disturbing a patch that size will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, potentially worsening your symptoms and contaminating other areas of the villa. UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety guidelines, stipulate that significant mold infestations require assessment and remediation by licensed professionals to ensure it is handled safely and effectively.

You need a professional inspection to identify the moisture source (likely a hidden AC condensate leak or insulation issue) and a proper remediation protocol. For immediate advice and to schedule a assessment, please call our certified team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
