Is AC mold causing my scratchy throat and cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit onto the carpet in the living room, and over the last few days I’ve started noticing a few small patches of black mould on the skirting board behind the sofa. Since this started, my throat has been feeling really scratchy and I’ve had a persistent dry cough that’s worse in the mornings. Could this mould exposure be the cause of these symptoms, or is it likely just a coincidence with the season change?

Based on your description, this is a classic presentation of health symptoms linked to microbial contamination from an AC system. The water leak from your AC unit in Jumeirah has created the perfect environment for mould growth—specifically the black mould you've observed. The constant humidity combined with organic material in the carpet and dust is a significant amplifier.

The scratchy throat and persistent dry cough, particularly pronounced in the mornings, are highly consistent with exposure to mould spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs). These particles become aerosolized and are circulated directly by the AC unit, leading to irritation of the mucous membranes. The season change is a less likely primary cause, as your symptoms began concurrently with the visible mould growth.

Under UAE regulations, specifically Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety guidelines, persistent dampness and mould growth in residential units due to faulty AC systems are considered a tenant health concern that should be addressed by the property management.

However, the visible mould is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The leak has probably saturated the carpet underlay and potentially the wall cavity, creating a much larger hidden reservoir of contamination. DIY cleaning is not advised, as it can aerosolize a high concentration of spores.

For a definitive assessment and to safeguard your health, a professional indoor environmental quality inspection is critical. We use thermal imaging to identify hidden moisture and air sampling to quantify spore levels. Please call our team for an immediate assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
