Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It’s about the size of a dinner plate and I’m worried about my allergies acting up. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or should I call a professional company for mold remediation in Dubai, and what would that likely cost?

That's a very common question we get here in Dubai, especially with our humid climate and AC-dependent living. Given your description, I strongly advise against a DIY approach, even for a dinner-plate-sized patch.

While a small patch might seem manageable, using bleach from a hardware store is a common misconception. Bleach doesn't kill mold on porous surfaces like drywall or wood; it just bleaches the colour, leaving the root structure (mycelium) intact. It will grow back. More importantly, scrubbing it yourself can aerosolize the spores, drastically increasing your exposure and triggering those allergies you're worried about.

In Dubai, professional remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's about identifying and fixing the moisture source—in your case, that AC leak. A pro will use industrial-grade HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial agents to properly contain, remove, and treat the area, preventing cross-contamination. They'll also conduct a post-remediation verification test to ensure the spore count is safe, which is a critical step for your health.

For a patch that size, if it's surface-level and the drywall isn't compromised, you might be looking at a cost starting from AED 1,500 to AED 2,500 for proper remediation and moisture control. However, without a proper inspection, it's impossible to know the full extent. The only way to know for sure is to have a certified inspector assess it.

My professional recommendation is to get a certified inspection first. Call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for a assessment; we can give you a clear picture of the severity and a precise quote. Don't risk your health with a store-bought solution.
