AC making my son's cough worse at night?« Back to Previous Page

My 4-year-old son has had a runny nose and this really persistent, dry cough for the last five days, and it seems way worse at night when he’s in his bedroom. I’ve been running the AC constantly because of the heat, but now I’m worried it might be making things worse. Is this something I should just monitor for a few more days or is it urgent enough to take him to Mediclinic right away?

Based on your description, this is a classic presentation of an indoor environmental quality issue exacerbated by the UAE's climate and our reliance on closed-air conditioning systems. A persistent dry cough and runny nose that worsens at night in a specific room is a significant red flag.

The constant AC use creates a perfect storm: it recirculates airborne contaminants and, if not properly maintained, can be a source of them. The primary suspects are:

1. Microbial Growth (Mold/Bacteria): This is my leading hypothesis. The cooling coils and condensate drain pans inside the AC unit are dark, damp, and often dirty—an ideal breeding ground for mold and bacteria. When the blower kicks on, it aerosolizes these spores and fragments directly into the room. Your son is breathing this in all night.
2. Particulate Matter: Accumulated dust, dust mite allergens, and other fine particulates in the ductwork or the room itself are being constantly agitated and circulated by the AC airflow, irritating the respiratory tract.

This is not something to just monitor. While a pediatric visit to Mediclinic is advisable to rule out a primary viral infection, the environmental trigger must be addressed to prevent symptoms from returning.

You need a professional indoor air quality inspection. We would conduct non-invasive tests, including moisture mapping and air/surface sampling, to identify the specific biological contaminants and their source, as per Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines. Do not attempt to clean the AC unit yourself, as improper cleaning can exacerbate the problem.

For immediate action, I recommend calling our certified team for a consultation. We can assess the situation and determine if a full inspection is warranted.

Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment. Your son's prolonged exposure is a concern that needs professional intervention.
