Black mold in closet from Dubai humidity? How to fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots forming along the edges of our bedroom closet, which is on the wall facing the outside. I'm worried the humidity from the recent weather is getting trapped in there. We run the AC constantly, but it still feels damp. What's the best way to treat this ourselves and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber would you recommend for a closet space in a Dubai apartment?

Good afternoon. What you're describing is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with the recent high humidity levels. Those black spots are almost certainly mold, and your assessment is likely correct—it's condensation and trapped humid air from the exterior wall, a classic problem even with AC running constantly.

First, safety: do not disturb it. Inhaling mold spores can cause health issues. For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Do NOT use bleach. Instead, use a commercial mold remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub gently to avoid aerosolizing the spores.

However, the cleaning is only treating the symptom. The root cause is the moisture. For a closet, a small desiccant dehumidifier or reusable moisture absorber pods (like those from DampRid) are your best bet. They are compact and effective for enclosed spaces. More critically, you need to improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar and consider installing a small battery-operated vent fan inside to move stagnant, damp air out.

That said, because the mold is on an exterior wall, there's a potential for a more serious issue within the wall cavity itself, which you cannot see. This is where DIY reaches its limit. A professional inspection with thermal imaging and moisture meters is crucial to rule out hidden condensation or a minor leak.

If the problem persists or the affected area is larger than it appears, please do not hesitate to call us for a professional assessment. We can identify the exact moisture source and ensure it's remediated to Dubai Municipality standards.
