Black shower grout: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed that the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower is turning black. It's mostly in the corners and has a really damp, earthy smell, especially since the weather got more humid. I tried scrubbing it with bleach but it came back after a couple of weeks.
Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service to stop it for good?

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with our high humidity levels and the fact that many buildings use gypsum-based plasterboard behind tiles, which is highly susceptible to moisture damage.
That black discoloration you're seeing is almost certainly active mold growth, not just surface stain. The damp, earthy smell is a key indicator of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), which confirm it's biological. The fact it returned after a bleach scrub is a major red flag. Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) embedded deep within the porous grout and, more critically, it doesn't address the moisture source. For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner (not just bleach) might work temporarily. However, given that it's in the corners—which are high-moisture points—and has recurred, the problem is likely more advanced. The moisture could be penetrating behind the tiles, compromising the substrate. In the UAE, this is a serious concern as it can affect indoor air quality and violate certain health and safety standards for residential habitability, especially in rental properties. My professional recommendation is to call for an inspection. We use borescopes to check cavity walls and moisture meters to quantify the saturation level behind the tiles. This determines if it's a simple regrouting job or a full remediation to prevent structural damage. Trying a stronger product could force the moisture deeper, worsening the problem and increasing the final repair cost. For a proper assessment and a permanent solution, it's best to get a professional opinion.
