How to clean black mold under sink in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a leak under the kitchen sink that must have been slow for ages. Now there's this thick, black, fuzzy mold all over the pipes and the back of the cabinet. I’m really worried about it spreading. What’s the best way to properly clean this myself, and who should I call in Dubai if it's a bigger job for the building?

Based on the description of a thick, black, fuzzy growth that's been developing for a long time, this is a serious issue that requires immediate and careful action. Here’s a technical breakdown for a DIY approach, but with a strong caution.

First, safety is paramount. This is likely Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold. You MUST wear an N95 respirator, nitrile gloves, and protective goggles. Isolate the area by sealing the kitchen doorway with plastic sheeting to prevent spore dissemination into your living space.

For cleaning, never use bleach. It's ineffective on porous surfaces and can release more spores. Instead, use a commercial antimicrobial cleaner specifically designed for mold remediation (like Benefect or similar) available at hardware stores here. Scrub the affected wooden surfaces aggressively. However, if the water damage has caused the wood to soften or swell, it is irreparably compromised and must be removed and replaced.

Crucially, the leak MUST be identified and permanently fixed by a licensed plumber before any cleaning begins. Otherwise, the mold will return. If the leak originates from a building pipe within the wall, this becomes a building management issue.

Given the extent you've described ("must have been slow for ages"), a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden moisture within walls and under floors, which is almost certainly present in your case. Improper remediation can aerosolize toxins and spread the problem.

For a proper assessment and safe, guaranteed remediation, it's best to call in experts. You can reach our certified team for an inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We'll provide a detailed scope of work and moisture mapping to ensure the problem is solved completely.
